KDF Thwarts Suspected al-Shabaab Attack Near Wajir Border

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel on patrol successfully repelled an attack by suspected al-Shabaab militants in the Konton area of Wajir County, close to the Kenya-Somalia border.

The incident took place on the evening of Saturday, August 22, 2026, when KDF troops stationed at Konton Camp encountered an unknown number of militants during a mobile patrol.

According to local officials, the militants initiated gunfire, but the soldiers responded swiftly, engaging and forcing the attackers to retreat towards Somalia.

All KDF personnel involved in the patrol were accounted for, with no injuries or fatalities reported.

Heightened Security Amid Rising Threats

Security agencies remain on high alert in the region as investigations continue to determine the identities and numbers of the attackers and assess any damage.

The attack adds to ongoing security concerns along Kenya's northern border, where cross-border incursions by al-Shabaab militants have increased in recent months.

Authorities have intensified patrols and surveillance to deter further attacks, especially following a deadly ambush on July 28 in Mandera County, where six security officers were killed after hitting an improvised explosive device (IED) planted by militants.

Security experts warn that these probing attacks could be precursors to larger assaults targeting security installations in the border counties of Mandera, Garissa, and Lamu.

Kenya has maintained a robust counterterrorism presence in the area since deploying forces into Somalia under Operation Linda Nchi in 2011 to curb threats from al-Shabaab.
