Canada has launched an extensive recruitment initiative targeting skilled healthcare and social service professionals worldwide, including Kenya. The effort by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) aims to address critical labor shortages in the country’s healthcare system.

Pathways for Kenyan Applicants

Kenyan healthcare workers can apply through several immigration routes:

• Express Entry Category-Based Selection: IRCC invites candidates from targeted healthcare and social service occupations directly. In June 2025, 4,000 candidates were invited under this category.
• Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): These programs, including the Atlantic Immigration Programme and Rural and Northern Immigration Stream, prioritize healthcare workers with job offers in regions facing acute shortages.
• Foreign Credential Recognition Program: Accelerated for 2026-2027, this program facilitates faster recognition of overseas qualifications for nurses, doctors, dentists, and pharmacists.

Qualification and Application Requirements

Kenyan nurses registered under National Occupational Classification code 31301 can apply for permanent residency without a Canadian nursing license, though credential assessment and bridging courses may be required. Pharmacists, dentists, and other regulated professionals must provide proof of recognized training, verified credentials, and at least six months of continuous full-time work experience within the past three years.

Applicants must also demonstrate proficiency in English or French at Canadian Language Benchmark level 7 or above and meet the Comprehensive Ranking System score thresholds for Express Entry.
