President William Ruto appointed Erastus Ethekon as the chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in July 2025. He and six commissioners will serve a single six-year non-renewable term as outlined in the official gazette notice.
Monthly Salaries
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) recently adjusted the pay for IEBC officials effective July 1, 2024. Ethekon receives a basic salary of KSh 594,000, a house allowance of KSh 200,000, and a salary market adjustment of KSh 196,000, totaling a gross monthly salary of KSh 990,000.
Each commissioner earns a basic salary of KSh 491,906, a house allowance of KSh 150,000, and a salary market adjustment of KSh 177,938, resulting in a gross monthly pay of KSh 819,844.
Additional Benefits
- Official vehicles with engine capacities capped at 3,000 cc are provided to the chair and commissioners for official use.
- Comprehensive annual medical cover includes inpatient treatment worth KSh 10 million, outpatient care of KSh 300,000, maternity benefits of KSh 150,000, and dental and optical coverage of KSh 75,000 each. This cover extends to the officer, one spouse, and up to four dependent children under 25 years.
- Upon retirement, officials qualify for a service gratuity calculated at 31% of their annual pensionable emoluments for each year served.
- Loan facilities differ by rank: the chairperson can access a car loan up to KSh 10 million and a mortgage of up to KSh 40 million, while commissioners are eligible for car loans up to KSh 6 million and mortgages capped at KSh 30 million.
