Senator Kajwang Warns Political Goonism Threatens Kenya’s Republic
Senator Moses Kajwang warns that unchecked political goonism could evolve into militias, endangering Kenya’s democracy and the republic’s future.
Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang has sounded an alarm over the escalating culture of political goonism, cautioning that it could develop into organised vigilante groups and militias, posing a serious threat to Kenya’s democratic framework and the republic itself.
Addressing the media on Sunday, August 23, 2026, Kajwang urged swift action to curb political violence, emphasizing that allowing such behaviour to persist risks eroding the country’s democratic institutions.
Rising Political Violence in Homa Bay
The senator’s remarks follow a surge in political clashes in Homa Bay, notably violent incidents on August 16 during a campaign tour by opposition figures. The confrontations resulted in multiple deaths, injuries, destruction of property, and disruption of local businesses.
Kajwang condemned the attacks on political leaders and their supporters, including assaults on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, describing these acts as unacceptable and detrimental to Kenya’s political culture.
Calls for Unity and Respect for Democratic Rights
He stressed that no community or political party, including the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), endorses exclusion or intimidation based on political affiliation. Kajwang highlighted the need for all regions to remain accessible to all Kenyans irrespective of their political views.
Reflecting on Kenya’s history, he recalled past injustices suffered by opposition leaders, including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, and urged against repeating such violations.
Apology and Accountability
In a gesture towards reconciliation, Kajwang issued an unconditional apology to the Luhya community for violence involving some of its members during the recent clashes. He called for collective responsibility in ending the culture of goonism.
Political Implications and National Cohesion
Meanwhile, the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Homa Bay Town MP Peter Opondo Kaluma over alleged inciting remarks linked to the "one-term" campaign and political intolerance.
Kajwang emphasized that political disputes must be resolved through democratic channels rather than violence, warning that failure to address goonism could jeopardize Kenya’s democratic character beyond individual elections.
He urged leaders to safeguard freedoms of expression, association, and political choice to preserve the republic’s integrity.
