Saliva Shows Promise as a Non-Invasive Tool for Detecting Colorectal Cancer

New research suggests saliva testing could offer a simpler, less invasive way to detect colorectal cancer by identifying mouth bacteria linked to the disease.

A recent study indicates that saliva could become a simpler alternative for colorectal cancer screening by detecting specific oral bacteria patterns linked to gastrointestinal cancers.

Researchers analyzed saliva and stool samples from 507 individuals, including those diagnosed with stomach or colorectal cancer, metabolic conditions, and healthy controls. They discovered that people with gastrointestinal cancers had elevated levels of bacteria typically found in the mouth appearing in their gut.

This observation led to the creation of the "mouth-to-feces index" (MF index), which measures the overlap of oral bacteria in stool samples. The index was significantly higher in cancer patients compared to healthy participants, a pattern not observed in individuals with metabolic disorders.

Potential Impact on Cancer Screening

Current colorectal cancer detection methods involve stool tests, blood tests, and invasive colonoscopies, which can be uncomfortable and deter some from screening. The ability to detect cancer-related bacterial signatures from saliva alone could simplify and encourage early screening.

Models based solely on oral bacteria successfully distinguished cancer patients from healthy individuals across different groups, highlighting the potential for saliva-based diagnostics.

Further Research Needed

While promising, the study emphasizes that saliva testing is not yet a diagnostic tool for colorectal cancer. Scientists still need to understand whether oral bacteria contribute to cancer development or if cancer alters the gut environment to favor these bacteria.

Future investigations will focus on improving test accuracy, understanding the underlying mechanisms, and validating the method in larger populations.
