Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto De Zerbi has stressed that the club’s extensive investment in new players this summer is vital to avoid another relegation scare and raise team standards.

After narrowly escaping relegation on the final day last season, De Zerbi’s side has spent over £300 million during the close season, including record signings such as Brazil winger Savinho from Manchester City for an initial £75 million, midfielder Sandro Tonali for £100 million, and Mateus Fernandes at £85 million.

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Premier League opener against Brentford, De Zerbi highlighted the financial demands of competing at the top level in England.

"The Premier League is a different league," said De Zerbi. "You have to adapt to the market and spending if you want to compete."

He dismissed criticism regarding Tottenham’s spending, noting that all top clubs invest heavily in players.

"I’ve heard a lot about 'Tottenham money', but you can’t compete at a high level without investing," De Zerbi added.

While Tottenham are also pursuing Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush, the coach refrained from discussing ongoing transfer talks.

De Zerbi confirmed the squad will be without newly appointed captain Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro for the Brentford match.

He outlined the team’s main objectives for the season: "First, to find the soul of the team, and second, to improve our football organisation."
