NTSA Seeks Public Help to Identify Nairobi Matatu with Obstructive Screens

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has called on Kenyans to assist in identifying a Nairobi matatu featured in a viral video showing large screens obstructing the driver’s vision.
The footage circulating online depicts two sizeable television screens installed across the matatu’s front windshield, significantly limiting the driver’s field of view. The driver is seen struggling to navigate traffic safely due to the obstruction.
Responding to public concerns, NTSA urged anyone with information about the vehicle’s registration number to come forward to facilitate an investigation into the safety breach.
Concerns Over Matatu Modifications
This incident has reignited debates about the extent of modifications on Kenyan matatus, especially those embracing the popular "nganya" culture. These public service vehicles often feature elaborate artwork, lighting, powerful sound systems, and entertainment screens to attract passengers, particularly young commuters.
NTSA has previously sought to regulate such customizations, aiming to enhance road safety. In 2025, the authority issued directives to remove unauthorized graffiti and artistic enhancements from PSVs, a move upheld by the High Court. However, President William Ruto later instructed NTSA to pause enforcement, allowing operators to retain artwork and graffiti provided safety standards are met.
The current call for public assistance highlights ongoing challenges in balancing cultural expression within matatu culture and ensuring road safety compliance.
