Rising Fatalities Despite Fewer Arrivals

  • On the Central Mediterranean route, deaths and missing persons more than doubled to 821, a 111% increase, while arrivals dropped 46% to 8,577. Over half of these deaths occurred in January, coinciding with Cyclone Harry's impact.
  • The Eastern Mediterranean route saw a 259% rise in deaths, with 244 fatalities mostly linked to sea disasters near Crete.
  • The Western African Atlantic route recorded a steep 78% decline in arrivals to Spain, down to 2,276, as departure points shifted further south, extending perilous sea journeys.
  • Conversely, arrivals to Spain via the Western Mediterranean route increased by 66% to 5,647, driven by a surge in land crossings into Ceuta and Melilla.

The IOM attributes the increased dangers to severe weather events, ongoing conflicts, economic pressures, and evolving migration policies that have reshaped migration flows globally. Ugochi Daniels, IOM Deputy Director General, emphasized that fewer arrivals do not equate to safer journeys, underscoring the shared responsibility to save lives.

Additional regional trends include a 9% rise in arrivals in Yemen via the Horn of Africa route and a near halt in northbound movements through Panama's Darién region. Hostilities in the Middle East have also influenced displacement and migration patterns across multiple regions.
