Farmers and workers in Kilifi’s Galana-Kulalu plains are benefiting from the rise of commercial irrigated agriculture, which is transforming the semi-arid region into a hub of agricultural productivity and employment.
Nyumba Agri Products Limited, operating for about three years in the area, has developed extensive irrigation infrastructure to grow onions, maize, cassava, and sisal. The company currently cultivates approximately 310 hectares of onions, 275 hectares of seed maize, and 300 hectares of commercial maize, achieving yields averaging 7.2 tonnes per hectare for maize.
The farm utilizes 23 centre-pivot irrigation systems fed by water from the Galana River, supported by solar power and diesel generators to maintain year-round crop production. Seasonal employment ranges between 1,300 and 1,800 workers, drawn mainly from nearby communities including Chakama, Shakahola, Bombi, Baolala, Habura, and Danisa.
New Opportunities for Local Residents
- Mwalimu Karisa of Bombi credits his farm job with enabling him to save money, purchase land, and start building a home while gaining valuable farming skills.
- Jessica Fedha from Shakahola uses her earnings from working on the onion fields to support her family and fund her siblings’ education.
To reduce waste and stabilize income, Nyumba Agri processes onions that do not meet fresh-market standards into flakes and uses solar drying to extend shelf life. The farm also supports livestock keepers by providing silage during dry spells and offers workers transport, accommodation, and medical care.
Impact on Regional Food Security
Nyumba Agri is part of the broader Galana-Kulalu Food Security Project, an initiative aimed at expanding irrigated agriculture to improve food production in this semi-arid zone. While the larger project has experienced delays, private sector investment has accelerated commercial farming and created new livelihoods, deepening the region’s reliance on irrigation from the Galana River.
This agricultural expansion is reshaping the local economy by creating jobs, enhancing skills, and providing steady incomes to communities that previously faced limited employment opportunities.
