President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Galkayo as part of his ongoing tour of Galmudug, addressing rising political tensions between the federal government and Puntland over the city's divided administration.

Upon arrival at Abdullahi Isse Football Stadium, the president was warmly received by a large crowd. He expressed gratitude for the welcome and emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and unity in Galkayo.

Call for Reconciliation and Cooperation

President Hassan urged residents to work together to reconcile communities and support Somalia's state institutions. He warned against actions that could deepen existing divisions and highlighted Galkayo's role as a city that symbolizes Somali unity.

“Galkayo is a city that unites the Somali people,” he stated, appealing for the protection of peace in the area.

Context of the Galkayo Division

The city is split between Puntland in the north and Galmudug in the south, a division that has heightened political sensitivities. Prior to the president's visit, Puntland raised security alerts and accused him of attempting to stir tensions, claims that Galmudug dismissed, affirming the president’s constitutional right to visit any part of Somalia.

Peaceful Visit amid Political Strains

Despite warnings, the visit proceeded without major security incidents. It formed part of a broader Galmudug tour, which included stops in Bandiiradley, Adado, and Dhusamareeb. During these visits, President Hassan met with local officials and communities, launching development initiatives and assessing security and living conditions.

The visit underscores ongoing efforts to bridge political divides and foster collaboration between communities amid unresolved disputes between Mogadishu and Puntland.
