The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced plans to increase the number of registered voters to 28 million for the 2027 General Election, up from 22 million in 2022.

IEBC Chairman Erastus Ethekon highlighted the commission's commitment to expanding voter registration nationwide, with special emphasis on young Kenyans reaching voting age and areas with historically low turnout.

Voter Registration Strategy

  • Registration drives will cover all 47 counties.
  • Focus on first-time voters, particularly youth eligible since the last election.
  • Efforts aim to include an additional six million voters before the 2027 polls.

Election Guidelines and Compliance

Alongside registration targets, the IEBC has issued guidelines for political parties, candidates, and stakeholders to ensure fair conduct during campaigns. These rules address campaign behavior, use of public resources, and media coverage.

Chairman Ethekon stressed that adherence to these guidelines is mandatory, warning of strict enforcement to protect the election's integrity.

The commission also called on civil society and government agencies to support voter education initiatives, underscoring the importance of an informed electorate for credible election outcomes.
