A French tourist, Pierre Michel Formosa, 68, tragically died after becoming stranded in Death Valley, one of the hottest places on Earth, where temperatures reached 47°C (116°F).
On August 17, Formosa and his travel companion, both from France, got their vehicle stuck in mud on a remote road. Attempting to seek help, they hiked across salt flats but after about 2 kilometers, Formosa was unable to continue.
The companion managed to find assistance from a passing motorist who alerted authorities. A search-and-rescue team soon located Formosa, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Park Officials Warn of Dangers
Death Valley National Park Superintendent Mike Reynolds emphasized the risks, stating, "This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly conditions here can turn dangerous." He added that despite Death Valley's unique landscape, its intense heat and remoteness pose serious hazards even to experienced visitors.
Death Valley, located approximately 200 miles northeast of Los Angeles, sees fatalities annually, underscoring the importance of careful planning when visiting.
