Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament David Kipsang Keter has shifted his position regarding former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s scheduled visit to the constituency. Initially opposing the visit, Keter has now extended a welcome to Gachagua and called for peaceful conduct during the event.

Gachagua is set to hold a thanksgiving rally on Friday, August 21, organised by his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) following a recent parliamentary by-election. Speaking on a local station on August 20, 2026, Keter urged residents to allow the rally to proceed without confrontation, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace.

Keter’s Change of Tone

Earlier this month, Keter had warned Gachagua against visiting Emurua Dikirr, describing him as "not welcome" and appealing for the cancellation of the visit to preserve peace. The warning came amid rising political competition in the South Rift region, where Gachagua aims to expand DCP’s influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.

However, with the rally date approaching, Keter’s stance softened. He stated, "Gachagua is welcome to Emurua Dikirr. Anyone who wants to come to Emurua Dikirr is welcome," and urged constituents to ensure the event remains peaceful.

Tensions and Security Concerns

Despite the invitation, political tensions persist. Gachagua wrote to Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja requesting security assurances for himself, his supporters, and entourage. In the letter dated August 20, he cited threats allegedly issued by Keter and others warning them not to enter Emurua Dikirr.

Gachagua reaffirmed his intention to proceed with the visit, noting it was organised following an invitation from Vincent Rotich, the DCP candidate who finished second in the by-election. He underscored his constitutional right to move freely, stating, "Emurua Dikirr is part of Kenya."

He also challenged the police chief to guarantee safety for all attending, referencing previous political violence in Homa Bay.

Political Significance of the Rally

The rally holds considerable political weight as DCP’s Vincent Rotich garnered over 10,000 votes in the recent by-election despite losing to Keter. This performance signals a growing opposition presence in the area.

For Gachagua and DCP, the event is an opportunity to solidify their foothold in the South Rift and build momentum ahead of the 2027 elections. For Keter and the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA), it is a test of their ability to sustain dominance in a constituency where opposition support is rising.
