The death toll from the tragic boat capsizing on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe has increased to 97, following the recovery of two additional bodies on Thursday, according to local police.

The vessel, which was reportedly carrying about 180 passengers and cargo, significantly exceeded its capacity when it overturned on August 11. The boat was en route from Kariba town to Chalala Fishing Camp when it encountered strong waves that caused it to capsize.

Rescue efforts managed to save 77 individuals. Preliminary investigations suggest that the disaster resulted from human error and negligence, as the captain proceeded with the journey despite prior weather warnings advising against sailing.

In response to this incident, the Zimbabwean government has initiated a formal inquest into what has become the country’s deadliest public transport accident.

Key Details:

  • Incident date: August 11, 2026
  • Location: Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe
  • Passengers aboard: Approximately 180
  • Survivors: 77
  • Confirmed fatalities: 97
  • Cause: Capsize due to strong waves, with human error implicated

The government’s inquiry aims to establish accountability and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
