Authorities in Uasin Gishu County have arrested a man suspected of involvement in a counterfeit currency syndicate, recovering fake cash valued at approximately KSh 334 million.

The seizure occurred on August 10, 2026, when police intercepted a Toyota Prado parked along Old Nairobi Road in Kesses Constituency. Inside the vehicle, officers found money boxes containing counterfeit Kenyan shillings and US dollars.

Details of the Seizure

  • The counterfeit cash included about KSh 2,615,000 in Kenyan currency.
  • US dollar fake notes amounted to approximately $2,990,000, equivalent to KSh 334 million.
  • A total of 3,267 fake currency papers were discovered.

Following the interception, two occupants of the vehicle fled and remain at large, prompting an ongoing manhunt. The arrested suspect is currently held at Eldoret Central Police Station and is expected to face charges related to manufacturing counterfeit currency.

Police Response and Public Warning

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Wilberforce Sicharani described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in combating fake currency syndicates. He revealed that the vehicle had been hired from a Kisumu-based car rental company.

Commander Sicharani urged residents of Eldoret and surrounding areas to stay vigilant against counterfeit money scams to avoid falling victim to fraudsters.
