Patrick Vieira, the former Arsenal and France midfielder, has been named the new head coach of Senegal’s national football team. The appointment was confirmed by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) following a unanimous decision by its Emergency Committee.

This marks Vieira’s debut as a national team coach after managerial stints with several European clubs, including Crystal Palace, Nice, Strasbourg, and Genoa.

End of Pape Thiaw's Tenure

Vieira replaces Pape Thiaw, who was relieved of his duties in July after Senegal's disappointing performance at the 2026 World Cup. Thiaw’s 19-month spell ended amid scrutiny over the team’s management and results.

Senegal began the tournament with losses to France and Norway but advanced to the knockout stage after a strong 5-0 win against Iraq. Their campaign ended in a dramatic 3-2 defeat to Belgium, where a 2-0 lead was overturned in extra time.

Following the exit, midfielder Pape Gueye announced a break from international football citing concerns about the coaching setup, which likely influenced the federation’s decision to seek new leadership.

Next Steps for Vieira

The FSF indicated that discussions regarding Vieira’s contract and administrative details are ongoing. An official presentation date has not yet been set but will be announced in due course.

FSF statement: "This strategic choice marks a new step in the FSF's commitment to establishing a high-level technical staff, aligned with the sporting ambitions of our country."
