Baringo Graduate Innovates Mobile Shop Using Boda Boda to Reach Rural Customers

Gideon Nguley, a Baringo County graduate, has transformed his boda boda into a mobile shop, delivering goods directly to customers in rural areas where access to physical stores is limited.

Since completing school in 2021, Nguley faced the challenge of unemployment common among young Kenyans. Rather than remain idle, he identified a business opportunity by bringing products to customers instead of waiting for them to visit a fixed location.

Every morning, Nguley loads a crate with various goods such as books, confectionery, and household items before setting out on his boda boda. His routes cover over 100 kilometres daily, mainly serving villages in Baringo and Elgeyo-Marakwet counties where shops are scarce.

This mobile approach allows him to reach dispersed populations conveniently, providing essential items and saving customers long travel times. His business especially thrives during the back-to-school season, when demand for school supplies rises.

Nguley’s model also benefits from understanding local needs, stocking products that sell quickly and adapting his inventory accordingly. His presence has become familiar to many residents who anticipate his visits.

By innovatively combining transport and retail, Nguley has created a sustainable income stream while addressing a community gap. His initiative exemplifies how Kenyan youth are responding to unemployment by developing practical solutions tailored to their environments.
