Kenya’s Under-20 rugby team, known as Chipu, clinched the 2026 Barthés Trophy in Uganda with a commanding 33-14 victory over Namibia in the final. The win underscores Kenya’s growing dominance in African junior rugby.
Samuel Asati, captain of the senior Simbas team and assistant captain of Kenya Shujaa, lauded the young players’ tactical skill, discipline, and overall quality. Having progressed through the U20 ranks himself, Asati noted that the current Chipu squad’s performance surpasses previous generations.
“We are proud of them. They played excellent rugby, which was truly thrilling to watch. This shows Kenyan rugby has a bright future,” Asati said.
Kenya’s path to the title included a 35-21 semi-final win over Zimbabwe, marking a successful tournament run. Asati emphasized the importance of sustaining momentum and providing continued technical and financial support to nurture these young talents into senior national team mainstays.
The 2026 victory adds to Kenya’s previous Barthés Trophy titles in 2019, 2021, and 2024, solidifying the country’s reputation as a powerhouse in African junior rugby.
Asati’s comments coincided with the announcement of a Kshs. 2.5 million sponsorship deal between the Kenya Rugby Union and Haco Industries’ Amara brand. The partnership aims to bolster the Simbas’ training programs ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
“Corporate backing is vital as it motivates players and teams to deliver results. This support arrives at a critical time as we prepare to rebuild and strengthen the national 15s side,” Asati added.
With the quality displayed by Chipu, Kenya is well-positioned to maintain its competitive edge on the continental stage through a new generation of rugby talent.
