101-Year-Old Nigerian Woman Arrested for Selling Cannabis Amid Fire Loss

Authorities in Nigeria have arrested Esther Ogunmabo, a 101-year-old great-grandmother, on charges of selling cannabis. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) disclosed the arrest took place in Ogun State, in the country's southwest.

NDLEA media director Femi Babafemi reported that Ogunmabo was found in possession of 90 grams of skunk cannabis packaged in retail sachets. She admitted to selling the drug to local residents.

Background and Arrest Details

• Ogunmabo revealed she turned to drug dealing after her provisions shop was destroyed by fire.
• Her daughter, residing in Lagos, is alleged to have arranged cannabis supplies every four days to the elderly woman.
• The great-grandmother sold the drugs in smaller quantities within her community.
• Following her arrest, Ogunmabo was granted bail and is set to receive counselling due to her advanced age.
• Her daughter has also been taken into custody.

NDLEA's Broader Operations

Alongside this case, the NDLEA reported significant drug seizures along Nigeria’s maritime routes, including the interception of over 42 kilograms of narcotics on a wooden boat en route to Cameroon in Akwa Ibom State. The agency also marked its first seizure of illicit drugs originating from Thailand.
