Former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati reported an attack on his convoy by unidentified assailants at Asumbi Junction on Sunday, August 16, 2026. The incident occurred as he and his team were travelling to Homa Bay for the Linda Mwananchi political rally.
In a statement shared on his official Facebook page, Wangamati condemned the rising political intolerance and vowed that such acts would not deter their activities. "Attacked by goons at Asumbi junction on our way to Homa Bay," he wrote, adding, "This type of political intolerance siku moja itais ha." He reassured supporters that the rally would proceed as planned, concluding with "Never the less homabay tumetika" and invoking "Mungu Mbele."

The Linda Mwananchi movement, linked to ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and other political figures, held a series of mobilization events across Homa Bay County on the same day. The rallies took place in Nyandiwa, Sindo, and Homa Bay Town, drawing significant political attention amid reports of unrest.

- Nyandiwa: Tensions were reportedly high ahead of the first rally scheduled for 10 a.m., where Sifuna and his allies were expected to appear.
In response to reported roadblocks, Senator Sifuna shared a photo of a boat on social media, humorously suggesting he might resort to water transport if roads remained inaccessible. His upbeat message welcomed the morning from Homa Bay despite the tense atmosphere.
