Siaya Governor James Orengo has sharply criticized the police for failing to safeguard the Linda Mwananchi convoy during a political tour in Homa Bay, accusing officers of surrendering their authority to violent groups amid escalating tensions.
Orengo, who was himself attacked in Ndhiwa, described the security lapse as unacceptable, noting that despite widespread public support for the movement, organised goons disrupted the convoy’s progress.
Orengo stated: "The people are with us everywhere we have passed since entering Homa Bay. However, these goons have been organised to attack our vehicles, interfering with our convoy. This is not the Kenya we want. We remain determined to hold all planned meetings."
He expressed disappointment at the police presence, or lack thereof, particularly in Ndhiwa where the attack occurred. Orengo suggested the police have effectively abandoned their responsibilities, allowing anarchy to prevail.
Political tensions in Homa Bay have intensified ahead of several planned rallies by Linda Mwananchi, including stops at Nyandiwa, Sindo, and Homa Bay Town. The unrest has involved incidents such as burning tyres at Oyugis Junction and clashes between supporters of Linda Mwananchi and some ODM factions.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo assured the public that security forces are committed to maintaining order during the rallies and stressed citizens’ rights to peaceful political expression. Meanwhile, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga called for political tolerance and urged leaders to avoid confrontations.
The police have responded by arresting three suspects allegedly planning violence during the events, recovering weapons including machetes and a National Youth Service jacket. County Commissioner Ronald Mwiwawi warned against the use of violence and urged political actors to focus on policy promotion rather than intimidation.
Journalists covering the rallies also faced attacks, with two AFP reporters injured and robbed, highlighting the volatile environment surrounding the political activities in the region.
