The National Police Service has been instructed to maintain impartiality and ensure public safety as political rallies by Linda Mwananchi in Homa Bay face disruptions from armed youths and road blockades.
In a statement released on Sunday, the police emphasized their commitment to upholding the Constitution and the National Police Service Act by facilitating peaceful assemblies while preventing disorder. Officers assigned to political gatherings are mandated to act professionally, impartially, and with restraint.
Rising tensions ahead of rallies
Recent days have seen youths armed with crude weapons roaming Nyandiwa streets and setting tyres ablaze in Homa Bay town, creating a tense atmosphere before the arrival of the Linda Mwananchi team.
Following intelligence-led operations on August 15, police arrested 15 suspects found with crude weapons along the Kisumu-Kericho Road. Preliminary investigations suggest these individuals were hired to disrupt political activities.
Police warnings and public appeal
The National Police Service warned political actors and the public against incitement or actions that could disturb peace, stressing that offenders will face legal consequences.
