Authorities in Migori County have apprehended two men suspected of gang affiliation after intercepting them with five pangas and other crude weapons along Nthiwa Road in Yamase.
The arrests followed a tip-off received by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), which indicated that a group travelling in two vehicles was carrying weapons intended for criminal activities.
Detectives from the Operation Action Team (OAT) stopped a silver Toyota Voxy with registration number KDB 463W and found the weapons during a search. The suspects, identified as Hillary Odhiambo and James Oloo Otieno, were taken into custody for processing ahead of arraignment.
The DCI confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the gang believed to have been travelling with the suspects.
Police Intensify Efforts Against Criminal Gangs
The crackdown aligns with recent directives from Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, who has urged officers to take decisive action against criminal gangs and warned that commanders failing to address the issue risk losing their command.
Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police, Gilbert Masengeli, also criticized some commanders for normalizing the presence of gang members and urged them to actively combat crime rather than merely report incidents.
Both leaders emphasized the importance of command responsibility and accountability in reducing gang-related violence across the country.
