Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has publicly dismissed rumors suggesting he is meddling in Kenyan politics by supporting opposition candidates ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking at the 23rd memorial service for Michael Wamalwa Kijana in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, Uhuru emphasized that he has no intention of contesting for any government position. He described his previous leadership as a privilege granted by Kenyans and expressed contentment in leaving future leadership decisions to the electorate.

Call for Unity and Peace

Uhuru urged political figures and citizens alike to maintain peace, unity, and mutual respect during the upcoming election season. He reminded Kenyans that the power to elect leaders lies solely with them and cautioned against division and intimidation.

“If you want votes, ask Kenyans politely; they will give them to you or deny you. I asked them at first and I was denied, I came back again and they voted for me,” he said, adding that claims of him engaging in politicking are unfounded.

Addressing Political Sponsorship Allegations

In a light-hearted moment, Uhuru referenced the cheers he received when mentioning Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna during his speech, clarifying that he is not sponsoring any political movements, including the Linda Mwananchi group. This came amid ongoing accusations from President William Ruto and his allies that Uhuru is financially backing opposition politicians.

“Jameni chungeni, sitaki kuitwa sponsor,” Uhuru joked, urging the audience not to fuel such claims.

Senator Sifuna has consistently denied allegations of receiving funding from Uhuru, stating that the Linda Mwananchi movement is supported by ordinary citizens and well-wishers.

Looking Ahead to 2027

As Kenya prepares for the 2027 General Election, Uhuru's message focused on peaceful participation and respect for voters' choices. He reiterated that only one candidate can succeed and encouraged Kenyans to unite for the country's benefit.
