President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has officiated the retirement of 19 long-serving generals at a ceremony held at State House, Entebbe. The move signals a significant reshuffle within the Uganda Peoples' Defence Forces (UPDF).
Museveni commended the retiring officers for their dedication, highlighting their discipline, patriotism, integrity, and commitment that have helped build national security. He encouraged them to secure their financial futures through prudent investments.
Financial Guidance for Retirees
- Museveni advised the generals to consider low-risk options such as treasury bonds, citing an example of a 15% return on investment.
- He recommended goat rearing as a sustainable income source due to its low maintenance and steady market demand.
- Other suggestions included fixed deposits and reinvesting returns into ventures like fish farming and rental housing.
Continuing Roles Beyond Active Service
Defence Minister Kiryowa Kiwanuka reminded the retirees that their service to the country continues beyond active duty, urging them to act as UPDF ambassadors. He congratulated them and encouraged the application of their financial management skills in civilian life.
Gen Edward Katumba Wamala, speaking on behalf of the retirees, stressed the importance of preserving the UPDF's reputation by maintaining professionalism, patriotism, and respect for civilians.
Notable Retirees
The group includes Lt Gen Charles Otema Awany, Lt Gen Charles Angina, Maj Gen Abel Kandiho, Maj Gen Geoffrey Tumusiime Katsigazi, Maj Gen Apollo Kasiita Gowa, Maj Gen Leopold Kyanda, and 12 Brigadier Generals. The Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, also acknowledged their contributions to the UPDF's transformation and national security.
