Kenya Poised to Host 2027 AFCON Opening and Closing Ceremonies, LOC Assures MPs
Kenya is on track to host the 2027 AFCON opening and closing ceremonies, with preparations at 80% and major stadiums nearing completion.

Kenya is confident it will host both the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), according to the Local Organising Committee (LOC).
The LOC, chaired by former CECAFA Secretary General Nicholas Musonye, informed the National Assembly's Select Committee on Regional Integration that preparations for the tournament are about 80% complete.
Key Infrastructure Nearing Completion
Central to Kenya's hosting capabilities is the Talanta Raila Odinga Stadium, which is 95% complete. This 60,000-seater stadium, along with renovations at Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani and upgrades to Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, forms the backbone of the country's AFCON infrastructure.
Regional Collaboration Under Pamoja AFCON
Kenya will co-host the tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania under the Pamoja AFCON initiative. The three countries recently held a high-level meeting in Kampala to review the tournament roadmap, reaffirming the event dates from June 19 to July 17, 2027.
Joint efforts focus on infrastructure, hospitality, security, media, and broadcasting, as well as implementing a common visa to facilitate movement across the host nations.
Economic and Regional Benefits
Musonye highlighted that hosting AFCON will leave a lasting legacy in terms of improved sporting facilities and infrastructure. He emphasized potential boosts to tourism, trade, and regional integration within East Africa.
"We are going to have the best infrastructure in Africa," Musonye said, adding that Kenya could eventually host AFCON independently within the next decade.
The Select Committee expressed strong support for the preparations, with Nominated MP Irene Mayaka pledging parliamentary backing and plans for stadium inspections across the host countries.
Looking Ahead
The LOC and sports officials remain committed to ensuring Kenya meets the Confederation of African Football's (CAF) standards during upcoming audits. The successful hosting of AFCON 2027 is expected to enhance Kenya's profile as a venue for major international sporting events.
