The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has established clear guidelines for foreign students wishing to obtain residency permits while studying at accredited institutions in the country. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) announced a streamlined process that combines residency authorization with Emirates ID card issuance.
Key Requirements for Residency Permit Applicants
- Passport Validity: Applicants must possess a passport valid for at least six months at the time of application.
- Study Programme Duration: The residency permit length corresponds directly to the length of the student’s academic programme. After completing their studies, students have a 180-day grace period before they must exit the UAE.
- Application Deadline: Students are required to complete residency procedures within 60 days of entering the UAE. Delays beyond this period will result in penalties.
- Overstay Penalties: Any stay beyond the permit expiry or cancellation incurs a fine of AED 50 per day, starting immediately after the grace period ends.
This regulatory framework reflects the UAE’s effort to align student residency permits closely with academic timelines rather than fixed durations, ensuring compliance and orderly residency management.
