TSC Unveils Updated Salary Scale for Teachers Effective July 2026

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has implemented the second phase of the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), adjusting the basic monthly salaries for all 11 teacher job groups effective from July 1, 2026.

This phase is supported by a KSh 8.4 billion allocation in the 2026/2027 national budget and will remain in effect until June 30, 2027. The CBA, signed with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), and Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET), spans four financial years, with planned salary increases ranging between 5% and 29.5% depending on job group.

Revised Salary Structure

The salary adjustments cover positions from entry-level Primary Teacher II (Grade B5) up to Chief Principal (Grade D5). Entry-level teachers currently earn between KSh 26,225 and KSh 33,444 monthly, projected to rise to between KSh 28,620 and KSh 37,100 by the end of the CBA cycle in 2028/29. Chief Principals, at the top tier, are expected to earn up to KSh 167,415 per month by 2028/29.

• Grade B5: Primary Teacher II – KSh 26,225–33,444 (2026), rising to KSh 28,620–37,100 (2028/29)
• Grade C1: Secondary Teacher III / Primary Teacher I – KSh 32,423–41,072 (2026), rising to KSh 35,336–47,261 (2028/29)
• Grade C2: Secondary Teacher II – KSh 41,100–50,287 (2026), rising to KSh 41,420–57,230 (2028/29)
• Grade D5: Chief Principal – KSh 133,351–164,977 (2026), rising to KSh 135,321–167,415 (2028/29)

Additional Allowances

Beyond basic pay, teachers receive various allowances including house, commuter, hardship, and leave allowances. Commuter allowances vary from KSh 4,000 for junior grades to KSh 16,000 for senior leadership roles. Teachers stationed in hardship areas qualify for extra hardship allowances, while leave allowances range from KSh 4,000 to KSh 10,000 depending on grade. A uniform disability guide allowance of KSh 20,000 is also provided.

All salaries and allowances are subject to statutory deductions and applicable Kenyan taxes.
