Trailblazers Elite Foundation is pioneering the use of advanced sports science tools to enhance the development of young volleyball athletes in Kenya. On August 14, the foundation plans to assess its youth players using VALD technology, a platform designed to measure physical performance and movement objectively.
Founder and CEO Leshan Julius emphasized that the initiative aims to move beyond traditional coaching methods by establishing individual performance baselines. "We want to understand each athlete's movement, strength, and force production to tailor their training effectively," he said.
Unlike group assessments, the VALD technology enables personalized evaluation, providing coaches with measurable data to track progress over time. This complements subjective observations and helps in creating detailed athlete profiles that highlight areas needing improvement.
Previously, Trailblazers utilized Catapult technology to monitor training loads for their senior team. The introduction of VALD into the youth program marks a significant step toward data-driven athlete development.
Supporting Informed Coaching Decisions
Julius noted that while technology enhances data collection, it does not replace coaching expertise. Instead, it equips coaches with precise information to make better decisions and refine training plans. The foundation plans to repeat assessments periodically, potentially every three months, to monitor progress and adjust development strategies accordingly.
Alignment with International Standards
The approach aligns with the International Olympic Committee’s guidelines on youth athlete development, which advocate for physiological monitoring and sport-specific testing while considering individual growth rates and biological maturation. The IOC highlights the importance of interpreting test results within a broader support system to ensure accurate development assessments.
As Trailblazers embraces this scientific approach, the success of integrating technology in youth volleyball will depend on how effectively the data is applied to training and athlete growth.
