The Tigray regional government has appealed for immediate global diplomatic intervention to prevent the escalation of armed conflict in northern Ethiopia.
In a statement released on August 21, the Tigray Communication Affairs Bureau expressed deep concern over increased drone and air strikes targeting the region. It warned that continued military aggression, coupled with international silence, risks plunging Tigray back into full-scale war.
Recent Attacks Highlight Tensions
- Federal forces reportedly attacked Tigray security personnel in Shererina, Western Tigray, on August 1.
- Drone strikes hit a school in Merewa District on August 10.
- Further assaults targeted Mariam Kubi village in Waja Timuga and Dandera near Mekelle between August 10 and 18.
- Warplanes struck civilian homes in the Momona neighborhood of Mekelle, injuring at least 13 people, including children.
The bureau highlighted that despite these provocations, Tigray has exercised restraint to avoid escalating the conflict, emphasizing dialogue as the only path to lasting peace.
Calls for International Engagement
The statement accused the federal government of disregarding the November 2022 Cessation of Hostilities Agreement, describing it as "moribund" and accusing Addis Ababa of failing to implement key peace commitments.
Tigray officials are now urging governments and international organizations to leverage diplomatic influence to halt further military actions. They cautioned that ongoing international inaction might be perceived as tacit approval, encouraging more attacks.
The recent violence has also disrupted cultural events such as the Ashenda festival, heightening fears among civilians.
While reaffirming their dedication to peace, Tigray warned that their patience should not be mistaken for weakness, underscoring their readiness to defend their people and territory if necessary.
"The time for decisive international engagement is now," the statement declared, urging swift diplomatic efforts to prevent a return to devastating conflict.
