Three individuals sustained gunshot wounds when security personnel linked to Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir reportedly opened fire during a public gathering at Bomu Stadium in Changamwe on Friday afternoon.

The event was part of the Mombasa County Revolving Fund's Biashara Mtaani initiative, aimed at supporting residents in Changamwe and Jomvu sub-counties.

Incident Details

  • According to witnesses, the shooting followed a group of youths advancing towards the governor while chanting "Wantam," a slogan derived from "one term," commonly heard in recent political contexts.
  • Governor Nassir's security detail allegedly intervened, leading to several shots being fired.
  • Police officers later recovered multiple spent cartridges at the scene.

The three injured youths were initially treated at a nearby health facility before some were transferred to Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialized care.

Ongoing Investigations and Reactions

  • Mombasa County Police Commander Stella Cherono confirmed that investigations are underway and called on witnesses to provide statements.
  • Human rights activist Francis Auma condemned the incident, urging the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to conduct an independent probe and ensure accountability.
  • Auma also appealed to the county government to cover medical costs for the injured and protect witnesses involved in the inquiry.

Despite the shooting, Governor Nassir proceeded with the event after increased police presence was deployed to bolster security.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including identifying who fired the shots and what triggered the confrontation.
