Ruto Says He Sought Uhuru’s Backing for Vision 2060 but Was Turned Down

President William Ruto disclosed that he personally visited former President Uhuru Kenyatta at his Ichaweri residence to request his support for a new long-term national development blueprint, Vision 2060, but Uhuru declined the offer.

During a media interview at State House on August 21, 2026, Ruto explained that the initiative aimed to unite senior leaders, including himself, Raila Odinga, and Uhuru, to collaboratively craft a future vision for Kenya beyond their political careers.

Seeking a Unified National Vision

Ruto said the idea was born from discussions with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who also endorsed involving Uhuru in the process. The President emphasized the importance of experienced leaders shaping Kenya’s direction for the next generation.

"My predecessor had an option to become a unifying statesman but instead chose to lead the opposition," Ruto remarked.

The comments come amid intensifying political activity ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition leaders consolidating their efforts.

Reactions from Other Leaders

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka urged President Ruto to respect Uhuru’s decision and allow him to retire peacefully. Kalonzo questioned the need to pressure Uhuru into the Vision 2060 project if he was unwilling to lead it.

"If he has refused to be chairman of Vision 2060, why force him?" Kalonzo asked, also advising Ruto to desist from targeting Uhuru over his opposition role.
