President William Ruto has openly accused his predecessor, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, of financially supporting opposition groups aiming to destabilize his administration.

Speaking to residents in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, Ruto criticized Uhuru’s tenure, highlighting failures in delivering affordable housing, universal health coverage, and education initiatives. He suggested that Uhuru, having not succeeded with these programs, is now backing opposition campaigns against him.

Ruto said:

  • "If you measure those people, their sponsor failed in delivering on affordable housing, universal health coverage, and education for our children."
  • "Now he is sending his agents to compete against me. I will deal with them decisively."

The President urged Kenyans to evaluate his administration based on tangible achievements rather than opposition slogans like "one term" and "must go," which he dismissed as lacking substance.

He pointed to ongoing projects across the country, including affordable housing construction, markets, and hostels, as evidence of job creation, especially for youth. Ruto encouraged young workers involved in these projects to prepare for more opportunities, emphasizing his commitment to continue such developments if re-elected.

"Young people, once you complete the affordable housing projects, I have more work lined up. Let's make Kenya a construction hub for the next 20 years," he said.

These remarks follow accusations from some Kenya Kwanza leaders alleging that Uhuru supports movements like Linda Mwananchi and other opposition efforts. Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot recently referred to opposition activists as "thieves and extortionists" allegedly funded by the former president.

However, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna refuted claims of financial backing, stating that Uhuru’s role is limited to publicly encouraging youth participation in leadership, without providing monetary support.

Sifuna explained: "I speak to him as Azimio's party leader. He doesn't provide financial assistance, only encouragement for young people to take up leadership roles."
