Reddit has launched a global trial of a new feature that converts selected posts into AI-narrated audio and short videos, blending its traditional text discussions with a format inspired by TikTok's popularity.

The feature enables users to tap a "Play" button on eligible posts to listen to AI-generated narration or watch video presentations that highlight parts of the conversation. This experiment currently targets English-language posts and select communities.

Bridging Text and Short-Form Media

Popular creators have long adapted Reddit threads into narrated videos on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Reddit's move aims to keep users engaged within its own platform by offering similar content consumption options without requiring users to leave.

Despite the addition of audio and video formats, the original posts and comments remain fully accessible, allowing users to read, vote, and participate as usual.

AI Narration at the Core

Artificial intelligence handles the narration process, generating voiceovers from the original posts and selected comments without requiring user recordings. The AI also creates video sequences that visually follow the discussion flow.

Potential and Challenges

  • The new feature may allow users to consume Reddit content conveniently while multitasking, such as during commutes or workouts.
  • However, condensing lengthy discussions into brief clips risks losing nuanced context, multiple viewpoints, and clarifications inherent in Reddit threads.
  • Retaining full text versions alongside AI formats is crucial to preserve the platform’s community-driven conversations.

Currently in testing, this initiative reflects Reddit's effort to diversify content formats in a social media landscape dominated by short-form videos. If successful, users might soon choose between reading, listening, or watching Reddit discussions.
