Purity Wangui Ngirici Joins DCP, Sets Stage for Kirinyaga Governor Contest
Purity Wangui Ngirici has joined Rigathi Gachagua's DCP, intensifying the race for Kirinyaga governor ahead of 2027 elections.
Purity Wangui Ngirici, a prominent Kirinyaga politician and businesswoman, has officially affiliated herself with the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. This move, announced on August 23, 2026, significantly alters the dynamics of the Kirinyaga gubernatorial race.
Political Background
Ngirici previously served as Kirinyaga County Woman Representative from 2017 to 2022. In the 2022 general elections, she ran independently for governor but was defeated by Anne Waiguru of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). Her independent bid followed a fallout with UDA after Waiguru was endorsed as the party’s candidate, sidelining Ngirici despite her prior loyalty to the party and close ties to then Deputy President William Ruto.
Following Ruto's ascent to the presidency, Ngirici was appointed Chairperson of the Kenya Seed Company board in July 2023. However, she was removed from this position in May 2026 amid accusations of undermining the ruling party, prompting her to ramp up political activity and public criticism of government policies.
Implications for Kirinyaga Gubernatorial Race
Ngirici's entry into DCP sets up a direct contest with Senator James Kamau Murango, also vying for the Kirinyaga governorship under the same party. Murango is known as a staunch supporter of Rigathi Gachagua, creating internal competition ahead of the 2027 elections.
DCP leadership has committed to conducting transparent primaries to select its gubernatorial candidate. Political analysts, however, warn that any perception of unfairness could trigger defections to rival parties such as the People's Party or Jubilee Party, both considered alternatives for sidelined candidates.
