Kalonzo Musyoka Defends Uhuru Kenyatta Amid Ruto's Criticism
Kalonzo Musyoka defends former President Uhuru Kenyatta's right to speak freely, dismissing Ruto's attacks and endorsing a one-term limit for the president.
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has come out in defense of former President Uhuru Kenyatta following sharp criticism from President William Ruto. Speaking on August 23, 2026, at a memorial service for former Vice-President Michael Kijana Wamalwa in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County, Kalonzo emphasized Uhuru's right to express his political views.
Addressing the crowd, Kalonzo stated that Uhuru should not face attacks for voicing his opinions, especially after the former president made it clear he has no intention of running for political office again.
“Uhuru has the right to speak as he did without being undermined because he has demonstrated leadership. He has openly said he does not seek any position,” Kalonzo said.
One-Term Presidency Call
Turning his attention to the upcoming 2027 General Election, Kalonzo predicted that President Ruto would only serve a single term in office. He urged supporters to back this view and expressed readiness for a direct contest with Ruto.
- “These remaining 351 days, this leader who is unsettled whenever he hears Uhuru Kenyatta’s name, we are making sure he serves only one term,” Kalonzo declared.
- “Mr Ruto, if it’s me Kalonzo, it will be a one-on-one contest. There is no need for him to continue,” he added.
Context of the Political Exchanges
Kalonzo’s comments follow accusations by President Ruto on August 13 in Eldoret, where he accused Uhuru of funding and organizing opposition politicians to undermine his government. Ruto called Uhuru an opposition “sponsor” and questioned his performance during his presidency, citing failures in initiatives like Affordable Housing and Universal Health Coverage.
Ruto also dismissed calls for a one-term presidency as baseless, urging Kenyans to judge leaders based on their achievements.
These developments highlight the intensifying political rivalry ahead of the 2027 polls, with key leaders staking their positions on Uhuru’s political involvement and Ruto’s bid for re-election.
