President Ruto to Lead Kenya Prisons Cadets Graduation and Commission New Hospital

President William Ruto is set to oversee the 27th passing-out parade of Kenya Prisons Service officer cadets on August 24, marking a significant step in enhancing the service's workforce and healthcare facilities.

During the event, President Ruto will also officially commission the Wanini Kireri Magereza Level IV Hospital, a 150-bed facility named after the first female commandant of the Kenya Prisons Service. The hospital aims to improve specialised healthcare access for prison staff, inmates, and the surrounding community.

In addition to the hospital commissioning, the President will flag off new vehicles acquired for the Prisons Service and inaugurate newly constructed housing units for prison officers, supporting improved welfare and working conditions.

Training and Graduation of Officer Cadets

The graduating cadets have completed a comprehensive 13-month training programme combining theoretical and practical instruction. Their curriculum included legal procedures, security operations, prison management, and discipline to prepare them for their roles in the correctional system.

Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh highlighted that the passing-out parade symbolizes the transition from training to professional duty, emphasizing the importance of integrity and discipline among the new officers.

Wanini Kireri Magereza Level IV Hospital

The newly operational hospital features an Intensive Care Unit, High Dependency Unit, radiology and dental services, maternity and paediatric wards, and specialised renal and dental care. It began outpatient services in March and is designed to reduce the need for external medical referrals for prison personnel and inmates.

The hospital’s establishment follows a presidential directive aimed at strengthening healthcare within the correctional system, aligning with efforts to modernise Kenya Prisons Service operations and enhance staff welfare.
