Pastoralist Youths Eliminate Senior Al-Shabaab Leader in Middle Shabelle
Two pastoralist youths in Middle Shabelle's Runirgood district killed a senior Al-Shabaab leader, seizing his weapon and ammunition, says Somalia's Ministry of Defence.
In a significant development in Somalia's ongoing fight against terrorism, two pastoralist youths from Runirgood district in the Middle Shabelle region successfully killed a senior Al-Shabaab leader identified as Hassan Alasow Rage, also known as Hassan Khusuley.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that the 50-year-old Hassan, born in Runirgood, was a key figure within Al-Shabaab, overseeing transportation logistics in the area. He previously held the position of head of zakat in Runirgood, responsible for collecting funds and assets from communities under the group's control.
Authorities reported that the youths confronted Hassan and managed to kill him, subsequently seizing an AK-47 rifle and ammunition he was carrying. The Ministry highlighted Hassan's activities as disruptive to local residents, livestock owners, and general movement within Runirgood and neighboring areas, contributing to displacement and insecurity.
This incident underscores the increasing involvement of local communities in countering Al-Shabaab's influence. The Ministry praised the pastoralist youths' courage and described the event as a reflection of Somali citizens uniting against terrorism.
Runirgood remains a strategic location where government forces, allied fighters, and local populations continue joint operations to dismantle Al-Shabaab's presence. While details about the exact circumstances of the encounter remain undisclosed, this act by the pastoralist youths represents a notable blow to the militant group's leadership in the region.
