Opposition Leaders Sign Unity Pact to Back Single 2027 Presidential Candidate Against Ruto
Kenya's opposition principals have agreed to support one presidential candidate in 2027, pledging unity to challenge President William Ruto.
Opposition principals have taken a decisive step towards consolidating their political alliance ahead of the 2027 General Election by signing a unity pact to back a single presidential candidate against President William Ruto.
The leaders convened at Windsor Hotel in Kiambu County on August 24, 2026, where they agreed to a Personal Unity Pledge and a Coalition Unity Agreement. These commitments aim to prevent divisions within the coalition as they prepare to present a united front to Kenyan voters.
Commitment to Unity and Collective Support
In a joint statement, the principals affirmed their readiness to set aside individual ambitions and party interests in favor of a broader national agenda. They pledged to participate in a credible process to select their presidential flagbearer and to fully support the chosen candidate throughout the election campaign.
Addressing Past Coalition Challenges
The pact is seen as a critical move to avoid the fragmentation that has historically weakened opposition coalitions in Kenya. The principals acknowledged that many Kenyans desire leadership that transcends personal and partisan differences, seeking a transformative alternative government.
They stated, "We recognise that millions of Kenyans are looking beyond individual leaders and political parties. They are asking whether those seeking to provide alternative leadership have the courage to put aside personal ambitions, historical differences and partisan considerations in defence of the greater national interest."
Coalition Composition and Political Context
The United Alternative Government coalition includes prominent figures such as:
- Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper Patriotic Front)
- Martha Karua (People’s Liberation Party)
- Rigathi Gachagua (Deputy President candidate)
- Fred Matiang’i (former Interior Cabinet Secretary)
- Peter Munya (former Cabinet Secretary)
- Eugene Wamalwa (former Defence Cabinet Secretary)
- Justin Muturi
- Lenny Kivuti
- Omingo Magara
With political activities intensifying ahead of the 2027 polls, the coalition’s unity pact seeks to manage internal tensions over leadership and influence, ensuring a cohesive approach to challenging the incumbent administration.
