The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has clarified reasons behind delays in processing retirement benefit claims, which sometimes extend beyond the standard 14 working days.
According to the Fund, delays often occur when claims require additional verification or resolution of discrepancies before approval can proceed. This verification process may extend the timeline beyond the expected period.
NSSF also highlighted that incomplete or inaccurate submissions, such as missing valid identification, incorrect bank details, or incomplete employment history, can contribute to extended processing times.
Another factor causing delays is unremitted contributions from previous employers, which necessitates tracing and reconciling records before releasing funds to beneficiaries.
Future Improvements
Looking ahead, the Fund aims to significantly reduce processing times. Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua announced ongoing upgrades to NSSF's digital infrastructure, including the launch of a mobile application designed to enable claimants to receive payments within 24 hours of submission starting in 2027.
Mutua emphasized, "From the day you retire, if you submit your documents within seven days, you will receive your first payment promptly. Our goal is to ensure pension payments are made within a day by next year."
The NSSF continues to encourage members to provide all necessary and accurate documentation to facilitate timely processing of their retirement benefits.
