New Dock Workers Union Leadership Tackles Promotion Delays and Housing Disputes
The new Dock Workers Union leadership prioritizes stalled promotions and unresolved housing issues affecting port workers in Mombasa.
The recently elected leadership of the Dock Workers Union (DWU) in Mombasa has taken office amid mounting pressure to resolve stalled promotions and a long-standing housing dispute affecting port workers.
General Secretary Abukar Mohamed emphasized that improving career progression opportunities will be a key focus. Many union members have remained in the same roles for extended periods, prompting calls for fairer promotion practices.
Abukar also highlighted the unresolved housing issue, which was not addressed in the latest Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Finding a sustainable solution to this matter is among the administration’s immediate priorities.
During the inauguration at the union’s headquarters on Jomo Kenyatta Avenue, Abukar called for stronger collaboration between the union and Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) management. He stressed that regular engagement is essential to effectively address workers’ grievances and prevent unnecessary delays in dispute resolution.
He urged dock workers to maintain unity, noting that solidarity is crucial for advancing their welfare and employment conditions. The new leadership aims to restore members’ confidence by ensuring their concerns receive timely attention.
The handover ceremony saw Abukar, alongside interim National Chairman Mohammed Mwasera, receive key union documents including the constitution and records of pending disciplinary cases. DWU Chairman Gunda Kaneno retained his position following the elections, with Election Board Chairman Renson Thoya also present.
As the new administration begins its term, it faces the challenge of addressing promotion backlogs and the housing dispute left unresolved in prior negotiations, both critical to improving the livelihoods of dock workers at the Port of Mombasa.
