Nakuru Widower Recalls How Wife’s Headache Led to Tragic Death Amid Doctors’ Strike
A Nakuru man mourns his wife’s death after her worsening headache coincided with a prolonged doctors’ strike that blocked critical medical care.
A Nakuru father of two has shared the heartbreaking story of how his wife’s initial complaint of a headache rapidly escalated into a fatal illness during a doctors’ strike that paralyzed health services in the region.
From Mild Symptoms to Critical Illness
The woman first experienced headaches and joint pain, which her husband initially treated with over-the-counter painkillers. When her condition failed to improve, he took her to St Mary’s Hospital in Gilgil, where tests revealed osteoporosis and anaemia, prompting immediate admission.
Healthcare Disrupted by Strike
Despite ongoing treatment, including blood transfusions, her health deteriorated further, culminating in meningitis. The situation worsened when doctors at the hospital commenced a strike the following day, forcing patients to seek care elsewhere. The strike, lasting over a month and affecting multiple facilities, left the family with limited options for medical intervention.
Community Support Amid Crisis
With the wife incapacitated and dependent on care, a community nurse and caregiver provided essential assistance. The husband received compassionate leave with partial pay from his employer, Lanet Lighthouse School, whose leadership also offered support. Neighbours and the Bahati Church of God congregation contributed food, household help, and prayers during this difficult period.
A Devastating Loss
Over time, the woman lost her sight and voice. One morning, while attending to her routine care, the husband found her unresponsive and cold, confirming her passing. The family received support during the burial, but afterwards, the circle of helpers gradually withdrew, leaving the widower to raise his young sons alone.
