Nairobi County Imposes New Noise Permit Fees for Weddings, Roadshows and Other Events

Nairobi City County has enacted new noise permit fees as part of the 2026 Finance Act, affecting residents and organisers of weddings, church events, roadshows, and other noisy activities.

New Permit Fees Introduced

• Weddings in residential areas will require a noise permit costing Ksh20,000, while those in gardens will be charged Ksh10,000.
• Short-term night events may attract fees of up to Ksh100,000.
• Roadshows face a tiered fee structure based on vehicle type: Ksh10,000 for saloon cars, Ksh30,000 for minivans, and Ksh50,000 for 24-wheel trucks or canters.
• Construction activities involving noisy tasks such as excavation, demolition, and drilling will need a Ksh20,000 permit.
• Churches and mosques must pay an annual Noise Emission Control Permit fee of Ksh5,000.
• Clubs will pay annual fees ranging from Ksh20,000 to Ksh100,000 depending on their capacity.

Context and Enforcement

The regulations come amid heightened efforts to manage noise pollution in Nairobi, with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) intensifying inspections and enforcement actions against establishments producing excessive noise.

Recently, NEMA inspected an entertainment venue in Lavington following public complaints. Meanwhile, a High Court petition challenges the playing of loud music in public service vehicles, with a hearing scheduled for next year.

Event planners and residents should note that activities involving multiple noise categories may be subject to several fees. For example, a wedding with amplified music at night in a residential area could incur multiple permits.

Non-compliance with the new noise regulations may result in penalties up to three times the relevant licence fee, making noise management both a regulatory and financial consideration for Nairobi residents and businesses.
