Musalia Mudavadi Declares 2032 Presidential Ambition, Rules Out 2027 Running Mate Bid

Prime Cabinet Secretary (PCS) Musalia Mudavadi has announced his intention to run for Kenya's presidency in 2032, while clarifying that he will not seek to be President William Ruto's running mate in the 2027 elections.

In an interview with TV 47, Mudavadi emphasized his commitment to backing President Ruto's bid for a second term, stating that his support is not contingent on securing any government position.

Long-term ambitions

"I am not asking to be a running mate. 2032 is my interest for the presidency. I am not speaking about 2027. I have made it very categorical that I am supporting William Ruto," Mudavadi said, distinguishing his presidential aspirations from the upcoming election cycle.

He also noted that while he would consider the running mate role if personally appointed by the President, he is not actively pursuing it.

Support for President Ruto

Mudavadi stressed that his endorsement of President Ruto is a deliberate political choice and not linked to any expectations for appointment.

"My support for him is not conditional on a position. If he sees I am capable of becoming a running mate, that is his decision. But in terms of the support for the seat, it is him we are supporting to be President," he explained.

Deputy President position

Addressing speculation about the deputy president slot, Mudavadi affirmed that the position is currently filled by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who he praised for effectively performing his duties.

"As far as I’m concerned, the position is not vacant. DP Kindiki is in place. He’s doing a good job. He’s working for the President and working for the country," he said.

Several political figures, including those from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), have expressed interest in the deputy president role ahead of the 2027 election. Mudavadi acknowledged their democratic right to do so but reiterated that the final decision on the running mate rests with the presidential candidate.

"That is the prerogative of the President. According to the Constitution, a President can decide who his running mate should be," Mudavadi noted.

Potential running mates

Other names reportedly considered for the running mate position alongside DP Kindiki include Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula.
