Loisaba Conservancy mourns pilot Josh Outram, who died in a Samburu helicopter crash, remembering his vital role in conservation and emergency response.
Loisaba Conservancy has paid tribute to Josh Outram, the pilot who lost his life in a helicopter crash in Samburu County on August 19, 2026. Outram was remembered as a skilled aviator and passionate conservationist who contributed significantly to the conservancy's efforts.
Outram served as Loisaba's pilot from 2020 to 2023, supporting wildlife conservation and security operations. His roles included conducting aerial surveillance, assisting in elephant rescues, and responding to emergencies affecting both people and wildlife. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Loisaba Rhino Sanctuary, notably aiding in the construction of its perimeter fence.
A fourth-generation Kenyan, Outram had over 15 years of experience flying within Kenya's conservation and commercial aviation sectors. Colleagues praised his professionalism, calm demeanor, and expertise in navigating challenging East African terrains.
After leaving Loisaba in 2023 to start his own charter service, he remained a vital part of the local community and continued to assist in emergency situations.
The tragic crash occurred near Mount Ololokwe in the Kirish area while the Eurocopter EC130 B4 helicopter was en route from Loisaba to Ewasonyiro. Seven people, including Outram and six tourists—five of whom were American citizens—died in the accident. Among the victims were Ecuador's intelligence chief Michele Sensi-Contugi and his wife Stephany Hollihan.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Air Accident Investigation Department and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.
Loisaba Conservancy expressed condolences to the families of all victims, honoring Outram's dedication to Kenya's wildlife and natural heritage.
