Kirinyaga MCA Beatrice Njoki Mitaru Passes Away, Governor Waiguru Mourns

Beatrice Njoki Mitaru, the specially elected Member of the County Assembly (MCA) for persons with disabilities in Kirinyaga, died early on Monday, August 24, 2026. She passed away at Outspan Hospital in Nyeri where she had been receiving treatment.

Governor Waiguru Pays Tribute

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru confirmed Mitaru's death and described her as a passionate advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities. Waiguru expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to Mitaru's family, friends, and colleagues.

"I am deeply saddened by the passing of Hon. Beatrice Njoki Mitaru. Kirinyaga will miss her commitment, warmth, and spirit of service," the governor said.

Years of Service in County Assembly

Mitaru was first nominated to the Kirinyaga County Assembly after the 2017 General Election under the Jubilee Party banner. She served in the Second County Assembly from 2017 to 2022 and was re-nominated in 2022 under the UDA Party for the Third County Assembly.

During her tenure, she held the position of vice-chairperson on the Departmental Committee on Finance and Economic Planning. She was also an active member of the Business Committee, Women Caucus, and committees focused on Gender and Youth, Environment, and Agriculture.

National Leadership Role

Beyond Kirinyaga, Mitaru led the Persons with Disabilities Chapter within the County Assemblies Forum (CAF), advocating for disability inclusion at the national level.

The Kirinyaga County Assembly speaker officially announced her passing on August 24, acknowledging her valuable contributions over nearly a decade of public service. Mitaru is remembered as one of the longest-serving specially elected MCAs in the county's history.
