Kindiki Pursues Stronghold in Mt Kenya East Ahead of 2027 Elections

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki is spearheading a focused campaign to strengthen his political base in Mt Kenya East amidst growing challenges for President William Ruto’s administration in the region.

Following setbacks in Mt Kenya West, where opposition candidates have gained ground, Kindiki’s strategy targets the counties of Meru, Embu, and Tharaka-Nithi. These three counties collectively register over 1.3 million voters, making them a critical battleground for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Key Political Engagements

• On August 15, Kindiki convened more than 30,000 elders from Mt Kenya East and neighboring areas at Nembure, a traditional dispute resolution site. The elders pledged to promote unity, reject divisive politics, and support development initiatives. They also urged Mt Kenya West elders to back Kindiki’s presidential ambitions.
• One week later, Kindiki met 15,000 grassroots UDA officials in Tharaka-Nithi, emphasizing their role as the party’s frontline defenders in communicating government achievements in sectors like economy, agriculture, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
• At Kinoru Stadium in Meru, over 40,000 grassroots leaders and opinion shapers from Mt Kenya East and surrounding counties gathered. Water and Irrigation CS Eric Mugaa endorsed Kindiki as the region’s leader, calling for united support ahead of the 2027 polls.

Regional Dynamics and Rivalry

Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire expressed confidence in Kindiki’s leadership, highlighting the region’s historical support for Mt Kenya West leaders and advocating for reciprocal backing of Kindiki, who holds the deputy presidency.

However, Kindiki’s push faces resistance from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who recently toured Embu to challenge Kindiki’s influence. Gachagua accused Kindiki of attempting to divide the Mt Kenya region under directives from President Ruto, emphasizing that elders traditionally unite communities.

Implications for 2027

The contrasting election results in recent by-elections underscore the shifting political landscape. While UDA barely held onto Mbeere North in Embu with a narrow margin, the opposition secured a decisive victory in Ol Kalou, Mt Kenya West.
