Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi has declared he will not seek re-election under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) banner in the 2027 General Election. He cited ongoing state persecution since assuming office in 2022 as a major factor in his decision.
Speaking during a visit to inspect road projects in Riabai Ward, Wamatangi highlighted his administration’s achievements, including the construction of 512 Early Childhood Development Education centres, 32 new hospitals, the installation of 12,000 solar lights, and significant investments in water supply and agriculture.
"We are focused on completing the development agenda before turning to politics," Wamatangi said. He added that he will announce his new political affiliation in December.
Third Mt Kenya Governor to Distance from UDA
Wamatangi’s move follows similar decisions by Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata and Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha, marking a notable shift among Mt Kenya leaders away from the ruling party.
Badilisha and the Nyandarua county assembly recently joined the Democratic Citizens Party (DCP), led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. Gachagua, who was impeached in 2024 after disputes with President William Ruto, views these defections as a sign of declining UDA influence in the region.
Wamatangi has yet to disclose which party he will join but confirmed the decision will be made public by December, after completing his county’s development projects.
