Background and Context
The recruitment drive follows a pledge by Governor Kimani Wamatangi during the 2026 Nurses Week celebrations to hire more nursing staff to manage increasing patient loads due to the county's growing population.
Governor Wamatangi commended nurses for their commitment, especially during recent industrial actions, highlighting measures such as promotions and prompt salary payments aimed at enhancing health workers' welfare.
At the same event, Githunguri Ward MCA and Health Committee Chair Joseph Muhia Kamau emphasized the need to increase nursing staff to meet rising demand. Nurse Martha Mburu also pointed out disparities in staffing levels across facilities, citing an example where one center had 183 nurses while another operated with just two supported by partners, calling for more hires to reduce burnout and improve care quality.
Health Infrastructure Expansion
The recruitment coincides with the county's ongoing efforts to enhance health infrastructure. According to the 2026 County Fiscal Strategy Paper, facilities such as Kahawa Sukari, Thogoto, Karuri, Gachororo, Ndenderu-Ruaka, Ndumberi, Gathiga, and Ndeiya are nearing completion. The county aims to finalize and operationalize additional health centers to broaden access to medical services.
