Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) is currently experiencing a significant rise in patient numbers as health service disruptions in several counties force patients to seek care at the national referral facility.

According to KNH Chief Executive Officer Dr Richard Lesiyampe, the hospital has seen an influx of patients who would normally access services at county and other local health facilities. This surge has particularly impacted non-emergency care, resulting in longer waiting times and congestion.

The ongoing industrial action, primarily involving nurses, is attributed to unresolved issues around collective bargaining agreements, employment terms, and career progression. Many county hospitals are operating with reduced staff, limiting their ability to provide routine and specialized services.

To manage the increased demand, KNH has urged patients with non-urgent medical needs to consider seeking treatment at closer health facilities where possible, in order to alleviate pressure on the hospital and improve access to care.

Despite the challenges, KNH remains operational and continues to offer emergency and critical care services. The hospital has apologized for any inconvenience caused by the current congestion and appealed for patience from patients and their families.
